What is Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT)?

  • Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) is the relational and therapeutic use of dance and movement to enhance:

    • Physical well-being

    • Emotional health

    • Cognitive function

    • Social and cultural functioning

  • Integrates:

    • Dance, movement systems, and creative processes

    • Psychological and scientific theories

    • Our body, mind and spirit

  • Aims to foster connection with the holistic self, where:

    • Physical, body-based experiences are equally valued alongside cognitive and emotional experiences

    • Promotes a sense of wholeness and integration.

Who are Dance/Movement Therapists?

  • Recognize the therapeutic value of the aesthetic and artistic experience of dance.

  • Understand the interconnectedness of the physical, emotional, and cognitive aspects of human behavior.

  • Utilize movement observation and analysis skills to assess individuals, and develop and evaluate therapeutic programs.

  • Acknowledge body movement as a fundamental form of human interaction and communication.

  • Are trained in counseling techniques and group facilitation.

  • Design and implement tailored programs for diverse client groups, within their scope of competency.
